Base and column:
Let’s start with column and base of this machine. This is the main casting, which helps in supporting other milling machine parts. Column comprises of oil reservoir and pump. It helps in lubricating the spindle. This column rests on the base. The base, on the other hand, comprises of coolant reservoir and another pump. It is used while operating the machine.
Knee:
It is mainly known as a casting part, which supports table and saddle. This knee encloses all gearing mechanisms. The knee is fastened to the column with the help of dovetail ways. The vertically positioned screw supports and adjusts the knee. Moreover, there is elevating screw, which is used for adjusting knee by raising or lowering lever.
Swivel table with saddle:
This saddle is located on the knee and helps in supporting the table. It can slide horizontally on knee’s dovetail. This dovetail, on the other hand, is located parallel to spindle’s axis. Now it’s time to know about the swivel table. It is associated to the saddle, which can be swiveled in either direction horizontally
Power feed mechanism:
The power feed mechanism is associated with knee and used for controlling longitudinal, vertical and transverse feeds. The feed selected lever is position as mentioned in selection plates for addressing desired feed rate. On some of the column and knee Milling Machines, the feed is likely to be obtained by turning speed handle until the rate is indicated on feed dial.
Table:
Also known as a rectangular casting, the table is located on top of the saddle. It is used for holding devices and comprises of T-slots for holding work. You can operate the table manually or through power. For manual use, you can turn the longitudinal crank.
Other than these parts mentioned, a milling machine further comprises of arbor support, spindle, overarm or overhanging arm and ram, as some of the other variations.
